Disaster Fatigue?

Aside from the fact that I cannot help but note that while the rest of the world seems to be focused on the earthquake in Pakistan & the Hurricane which struck Guatemala and El Salvador, CNN remains resoundingly focused on the hurricanes which struck the U.S. as if nothing else mattered. Now, I am beginning to wonder if Canada has disaster fatigue, too. CAD300,000 & 2 plane loads of blankets? In Louisiana the US is putting up "camps" made out of mobile homes. And all we can muster for Pakistan is a few blankets? I worked there for nearly 4 years. I'm passionate about Pakistan the way some women are passionate about shoes. And either way, the poor in New Orleans are not as poor as the poor in rural Pakistan. They were *already* surviving on USD1/day... and I'm not exaggerating. And yet, all my government can come up with is blankets?

Edit Sure enough, I open my paper this morning (Oct. 11th) to see that Canada has significantly increased it's donation to CAD 20 million. Canada always plays this game -- the How little will our population let us get away with giving game -- and it is just sooo unnecessary.

fatigue

i know exactly what you mean. I was watching BBC this AM and saw the footage, and yet, in my heart I knew that the response would not be great due to all the disasters that have already happened. Sigh... it breaks my heart. I can't help but wonder how much of this is a political moment and not human necessity. ECH... i can't go on. i'll end up in a rant.

UGGH

Don't get me started. I know exactly what you mean. But should you really be surprised that BBC has better coverage than CNN... ech.

Anyhow, I was just watching the Passionate Eye and they had two pieces on US media coverage of the war... it's really interesting. Have you seen it?

Re: UGGH

Don't get me started.

I promise not to get you started unless we are at a pub sipping martinis and eating fries.

Undoubtedly it was a repeat Passionate Eye? I've seen several on that very subject, my favourite actually is Control Room, which is about al Jazeera directly and US media coverage of the invasion of Iraq indirectly.
